In a world where change is constant, disruption is unpredictable and growth, increasingly hard to extract, great leaders who can navigate ambiguity and bring out the best in their people have never been more in demand. That was certainly the message coming from the audience at our Sydney HR Leaders Forum where cultivating an inclusive workplace culture was identified as the number one priority for 2018 among the 90+ companies represented.
Success requires inclusive leaders
Mercer believes being inclusive is about much more than having diverse people feel they belong – although that is indeed important. Being inclusive is about being curious, non-judging and open to new ideas, being present and connected with people, holding themselves and others accountable for performance and behaviours, and empowering others to thrive. Acting in alignment with personal values and inspiring a vision for the team are also essential behaviours.
Consistently behaving in this way requires us to override our biological predisposition, which on autopilot results in clinging to the status quo, subtly excluding people who are different, avoiding conflict and preserving our own self-interest, all of which are amplified by stress.
That’s why the technical skills developed on the path to leadership will not be enough to transform good managers into great leaders. To get there, we need to understand how our thoughts and emotions influence our behaviour (for better and for worse), and then adapt our mindsets to alter our behaviours.
The Power of Mindfulness
Neuroscience now confirms that mindfulness improves our cognitive function and helps us shift our mindset to manage our behaviours. While mindfulness in the workplace has been most commonly used to improve concentration, focus, and resilience, Mercer believes integrating mindfulness as a tool to facilitate deep self-reflection and change the structure of our brain, helps leaders make inclusion a way of being.
