Melbourne is now home to Marsh & McLennan Companies’ (NYSE: MMC) third largest office worldwide, behind only New York and London.  The relocation of the Melbourne headquarters of Mercer, Marsh, Guy Carpenter and Oliver Wyman to the newly-built Collins Square development at 727 Collins Street adds further support to Docklands’ claim of being Melbourne’s financial services hub.

The Marsh Mercer branded building will house some 1,500 employees, occupying 22,882 square metres of office space.  The Collins Square development is a US $1.7 billion project developed by Walker Corporation and will be the largest mixed-use development built in Australia.

Marsh & McLennan Companies Australia Chairman, Peter Promnitz, said, “It’s always been our goal to bring our operating companies together under the one roof to share knowledge and resources.  We’ve achieved this goal in a state of the art building in Collins Square.”

Walker Corporation Chairman, Lang Walker, said, “The Marsh Mercer building is a centrepiece of what is now Australia’s most exciting commercial development in Collins Square, which delivers a strong workplace and community interface to allow people to meet, work and play in the one area.”

Mercer’s Managing Director & Market Leader, Pacific, David Anderson, said, “We are proud of the significant investment Mercer has made for our people and our clients through our commitment to Collins Square.  This is an exciting milestone for us; a new environment for our world class people to come together and contribute to Mercer’s and our clients future growth.”

John Clayton, CEO of Marsh Australia, said, “Our new Melbourne home offers all the best that this city has to offer, with a Docklands address, premium facilities and strong sustainability features. Most importantly, the building allows for the flexibility to suit our evolving needs as we grow into the future.”

The new office space is occupied primarily by Marsh and Mercer employees. Marsh vacated premises at 555 Lonsdale Street while Mercer consolidated its employees from three separate offices at 33 Exhibition Street, and 360 and 477 Collins Street.

About Collins Square:

  • Bates Smart designed this tower to stand proud on Collins Street as a gateway building.  The building is anchored by two 35 tonne V-shaped columns that ground the building and herald the entrance to the 10,000 sqm of retail space that will extend across Collins Square.
  • The lobby establishes a new benchmark for office towers with cathedral like proportions. While the lobby’s scale sets the tone, Bates Smart has included details such as hand-cut stone and woven-carpets with furniture from Italy.
  • The building has been designed to achieve a Green Star – 5 Star rating and a 5 Star NABERS Energy and Water rating. Sustainable elements of the tower include a 120,000 litre rainwater tank, tri-generation plant, and high performing glazing.
